IVORS 2011
This year’s Ivor Novello Awards was, as usual, a fabulous star-studded event and brought together an impressive collection of songwriters of all genres and ages. Songwriter of the year went to PLAN B ….definitely a superstar!…Elton John presented the award and made a generous spirited speech in which he heaped praise on young BEN DREW, whose number 1 album “The Defamation Of Strickland Banks” .got the recognition it so richly deserved……. Special awards to the wonderful Paul Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim also went down very well on the day……. I always enjoy having lunch with eleven hundred close personal friends !!
Now preparing for my first PRS AGM as Chairman……. slightly nerve wracking ….. I have been Chairman for only five months but a PRS member for forty-six years…… Glad to have the ACM gospel choir performing on the day.
Rogue – Dedication
Released in 1975 in the UK on Epic, and in the Netherlands on Negram. Taken from their self-titled album, which was also released under the title Fallen Angel. The song is one of many songs written by Guy Fletcher and Doug Flett. Guy formed Rogue in 1975 with former Onyx guitarist Al Hodge and John Hodkinson. The band recorded three albums before folding in 1979. The band also produced a version for London’s Capital Radio, with the first line: “Capital’s our local station.” The song was covered by the Bay City Rollers on their 1976 album Dedication. Released as a single in the US, it made #60 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2005, Guy was awarded an OBE for services to British music. He has a nephew, also called Guy Fletcher, who was a member of Dire Straits from 1984 until their dissolution in 1995.
Justin’s done it again !
Can’t say how proud I am of my son Justin…..Late last night we heard the news that he had won a BAFTA award for best children’s TV presenter ….and his programme “SOMETHING SPECIAL” also won best pre-school TV programme . Two BAFTAs in one night…….What a boy
Fletcherhorn
Found this old French horn in a junk shop…..it’s pitch was “E” so I added a swan neck and dropped the pitch to E flat to make it more band friendly….Sounded remarkably good…Wonder where it is now ?…Anybody seen it ?
Libson back in Guy’s Studio in Wantage
Paul (Radar)Libson is definitely Guy’s favourite sound engineer…… Having (very kindly) recently installed a pair of PMC monitors in the studio he is coming to record in a couple of weeks…. Watch this space !…… Unconventionals new Christmas single mastered last week….Jive Aces recording in Los Angeles this week……Also we are finishing John Dawson Read’s fabulous new tracks this month….. and Christoph Denoth is coming to record as well….It’s all too much…. I must remember what my Father used to say…”Beware of an excessive sense of well being” !….More later
BACK TO THE SAVOY
The 37th BASCA Gold Badge Awards took place on Wed 20th October back in its spiritual home…The Savoy Hotel. what a lovely bunch of people the recipients were…funny..modest.. no posing… no pretence….I would like to thank them all for giving us such a great day.
TIM ALLEN is writing again !!
There is definitely something in the air…… Immediately following John Dawson Read’s return to the studio, another old favourite songwriter emerged from the past….. Tim Allen has been living in Connecticut for many years and out of the bizz. Now ,having moved to Mississippi , Tim is busy writing and recording again after a couple of decades out of the swim….. This is very exciting news and I can’t wait to hear the new songs….Watch this space !
